Alwanzatar — Engsyre
(Apollon Records ARP078, 2024, LP / DL)

Norway’s maestro of squishy-squelchy electronic textures and rhythms, Alwanzatar, returns with another set of eight synthesized instrumentals called Engsyre. This time the tracks are mostly in the five minute range and there is some variation in tone and sonic texture from track to track. However, he approaches each piece the same way. He first lays down a rhythm followed by a layer of his percolating, squelchy sequencers and appreciators. After a few minutes a melodic synth lead appears. To add some color and a bit of variation, he integrates a Mid-Eastern vibe on a couple of tracks: “Høymole” and the excellent “Fjerdingby filterbattle.” And speaking of filters, Alwanzatar uses them to modify his rhythms and add a bit of interest on “Skarntyde.” On the nine-minute “En Løfterik Morgen” he adds flute, but this long piece tends to ramble with all of his noodling. The last track “Morgendugg på Spindelvev” sounds different from the rest of the album and is a nice intriguing way to close the album. Engsyre is an improvement over his previous album Kosmisk Skrekk, but I still find his music of limited appeal, unless you are a fan of old forest rave music.
