Alio Die & Amelia Cuni — Apsaras
(Projekt 126, 2001, CD)

Apsaras Cover art

It can be pretty difficult tracking down all of Stefano Musso’s (aka Alio Die) work, especially in such a prolific year, so it’s nice to see at least one of these on a higher profile label. Simply put, Alio Die’s works are among the most important in the field, created by a musician who has managed to find a personal sound in the midst of the sublime. Musso is joined by Amelia Cuni, who is a vocalist in the North Indian dhrupad tradition, and together they weave together an intensely mystical, transcendent web of the rich timbral subtlety we have come to expect from Alio Die’s previous works. As slow, misty atmospheres wisp like fog across the listener’s consciousness, Cuni entrances us with her gentle, mournful vocals. The concept of Apsaras is definitely of the water, as apsaras are described in the liner notes as celestial nymphs of a sort, and just as these nymphs are described as seductive, so the music unfolds likewise. Only six pieces, but they seem to go oh-so-fast, as the gentle aqueous samples and drones surround the listener, supporting Cuni’s soothing vocals. It’s absolutely entrancing music. Yet again, it seems that Alio Die can do no wrong.
