Värttinä is a Finnish band that combines Finnish folk music with rock and electronics. The group's beginnings go back to 1983, when Sari and Mari Kaasinen started singing together in their home in the Karelia region of southern Finland. Since that time, the group has been through numerous changes, generally featuring three female singers backed by instrumentalists. Maari Kaasinen still involved, though all the other members have changed. The group came to worldwide attention in the early 90s, and have remained one of the primary exponents of Finnish folk music.
