Esperanza Spalding is an American bassist and singer, born 18 October 1984 in Portland, Oregon, USA. After playing in Portland with a band called Noise for Pretend, her proficiency earned her scholarships to Portland State University and the Berklee College of Music. She released her first solo album the year after graduating from Berklee, where she became one of the youngest instructors ever hired. Since that time, she has continued to release solo albums and work with a variety of other musicians, including Joe Lovano, Mike Stern, Terri Lyne Carrington, Salif Keita, Bobby McFerrin, Dianne Reeves, and others.
