Tomasz Stańko RIP – Tomasz Stańko, one of the greats of Eastern European jazz, has died at the age of 76. Stańko's career started in Krzysztof Komeda's quintet, where he contributed trumpet from 1963-1967, when he formed his own group. He worked extensively with Edward Vesala, Don Cherry, Zbigniew Seifert, Chico Freeman, Howard Johnson, Cecil Taylor, and many others. Many of his recordings have been released by ECM, an association that began in the mid-70s. » Read more

Saviour Machine - Legend Part 1 – I first glimpsed a newsletter by this band at Progfest 95 (or was it '96?), and to be honest I thought it was some form of hate group and didn't give it another glance. The singer was bald,...  (1999) » Read more

Fear of Flying - More Attempts at Perfection – In 1988, this upstate NY trio (then a quartet with dedicated vocalist) released their debut album Parents Tend to Oxygen First, a fairly typical slab of late-80s keyboard strong progressive pop, not...  (2005) » Read more

Brannan Lane - Answer the Sky – It’s been a while since we’ve heard something new from Brannan Lane, maybe a year or more, which is a change from his 2+ release per year schedule from before; but Answer the Sky has certainly...  (2007) » Read more

Machiavel - Virtual Sun – I'm not even a big fan of Machiavel in their "classic" phase, circa Mechanical Moonbeams. Even then the group's proto-neo-progressive / mainstream symphonic rock style does little to...  (2000) » Read more

Jean-Luc Chevalier - Hommage à Jaco – This is Chevalier's tribute to the extraordinairy bassist Jaco Pastorius. As expected we find here a music that gives ample room to horns. The trumpet is introducing and playing melodies,...  (1997) » Read more
