Rhys Chatham (born September 19, 1952) is an American composer, guitarist, and multi-instrumentalist, primarily active in avant-garde and minimalist music. He is best known for his "guitar orchestra" compositions. He has lived in France since 1987. He studied with such modern composers as La Monte Young, Gustav Leonhardt, Rosalyn Tureck, Morton Subotnick, and Glenn Gould, and has worked with Philip Glass, Meredith Monk, Pauline Oliveros, Steve Reich, Fred Frith, Robert Fripp, Arto Lindsay, and John Lurie, among others.
