Bang on a Can is a group formed in 1987 which is recognized worldwide for ultra-dynamic live performances and recordings of innovative contemporary music, freely crossing the boundaries between classical, jazz, rock, world, and experimental music. The group started with a concert in a SoHo gallery with Michael Gordon, David Lang, and Julia Wolfe taking on the roles of music directors. Personnel has varied over the years depending on availability and the needs of pieces performed.

Rieflin was best known as a drummer in bands ranging from post-punk to industrial to indie-rock to progressive rock, including work with The Blackouts, Ministry, Nine Inch Nails, Swans, Land, and King Crimson.
