Unicorn — Shed No Tear: The Early Late Unicorn
(Bandcamp Think Like a Key TLAK1184, 1978/2024, CD / DL)

Unicorn was a British soft country-rock band that was active from 1967 to 1978. This Think Like a Key retrospective album comprises Unicorn’s first and last recordings. The first 14 tracks, all composed by Ken Baker, are a reissue of their Shed No Tear: 1977 - 1978 Sessions, tracks 15 to 21 are a selection of songs from their early days when they were known as The Late (The Late Recordings: 1967 - 1969) and the final track is a previously unreleased live recording from 1975. All 22 tracks have been lovingly remastered by Prof. Stoned. The Shed No Tears songs are pleasant smooth country-rock songs with beautiful vocal harmonies, with a bit of beach rock and reggae influence on “Can’t Stop Thinking About You” and “You Tell Too Many Lies.” What is interesting is that you would never guess that Unicorn was a British Band, as they sound like they could have been from Los Angeles in the 70s. Now the earlier tracks do have more of a Brit pop-psych and folk-rock feel, but the sound quality is a bit muffled. I do prefer the earlier songs before the Unicorn morphed into a country rock band as they showed some uniqueness in their sound and not overly influenced by US country rock. Overall, Shed No Tear: The Early Late Unicorn is a nostalgic look back at the 60s and 70s spanning 80 minutes of music. Nothing really jumps out at me and grabs my attention. For me, this collection is a pleasant, comforting set of songs.
