Triptides — Alter Echoes
(Alive Natural Sound 0214, 2021, LP)

by Henry Schneider, Published 2021-04-27

Alter Echoes Cover art

Triptides is an established fixture of the LA neo-psych scene, with After Echoes being their seventh album. Their sound oscillates between psych-pop and bluesy psych R&B, channelling The Byrds, plus a bit of Pink Floyd, Hawkwind, and Cream. They’ve got Roger McGuinn’s jangling guitar and vocals down pat, though please do not mistake them for The Byrds, despite their retro sound. Over the course of the eleven songs you will hear hints of Hawkwind’s “Mirror of Illusion,” Tommy James and the Shondells’ “Crystal Blue Persuasion,” Cream’s “I Feel Free,” and Pink Floyd’s “Obscured by Clouds,” eddying around Triptides’ pop psych songs. Triptides is led by multi-instrumentalist Glenn Brigman, along with drummer Brendan Peleo-Lazar and bassist / guitarist Stephen Burns. After Echoes is a fun listen, with enough variety between the tracks to keep your attention throughout its 42 minutes. Recommended for fans of 60s and 70s West Coast psych.
