On their Bandcamp page, The Sun or the Moon declares that “Krautrock has long since ceased to be a disrespectful generic term, but rather a seal of quality.” That seal of quality certainly applies to their second album, just as it did their debut. They seamlessly blend a number of the different streams that are collectively called Space Rock into a pleasing sound. “Operation Mindfuck” features a lot of burbling synthesizer that’s a bit like something Ozric Tentacles might come up with, but it’s also infused with a bit of Hawkwind, and the piano coda comes from someplace else entirely. “Psychedelik Kosmonaut” brings in some big power chords on the guitar to back chanting in German, and also features some freaky slide guitar that’s like Pink Floyd on amphetamines. “Planet 9” features another change-up, kind of like Black Sabbath’s “Planet Caravan” only with piano and flute. Throughout the album’s eight tracks, they display a fine sense of dynamics as well as a feeling for how long tracks should be. A couple of the tracks stretch over ten minutes, but the rest are shorter, and avoid running ideas into the ground. The core quartet is augmented with a number of guest musicians, broadening their palette. In short, Andromeda has everything I want in a Space Rock album, balancing reverence for the genre’s history with a sense of exploration.
