When approaching a band like The Spacelords, I always find myself wondering how music that does such a faithful job of mining the sounds of the past can still be enjoyable for a person who’s always looking for something new. If you’ve ever heard them before, you know that The Spacelords, as their name implies, play space rock in the classic mid-70s vein of Hawkwind, though entirely instrumental and maybe a bit tighter in their playing. Uranus Omnibus Sanctus is their latest album (their ninth), and it features four tracks of hypnotic instrumental riffing and trippy effects played by a trio of guitar (Matthias 'Hazi' Wettstein), bass (Ekhard 'Akee' Kazmaie), and drums (Marcus Schnitzler), with uncredited keyboards to fill things out. And while the tracks may average over ten minutes in length, the riffs are in a constant state of flux, building up and stripping down, and they have a keen sense of when to hit a dramatic shift to an alternate section. If you’re looking for concise, melodic, hummable tunes, you’ll be disappointed, but if you’re one of the many listeners who appreciate space rock’s power, The Spacelords are near the top of the class.
