The Grand Astoria — From the Great Beyond
(Addicted Label BNiL 770, 2020, CD / DL)

Russian band The Grand Astoria are back From the Great Beyond with a new album / EP of their signature blending of metal, stoner rock, and psychedelia. The album kicks things off with the title track, five minutes of gothic western psych conjuring images of The Man with No Name riding into town. Then they abruptly shift to “Wasteland,” two minutes of distorted metal guitar and fuzz rock. “Njanatiloka” follows and takes the listener on a ten-minute ride of stoner rock with a heavy bass riff and channeling their inner Ozzy. And half way through The Grand Astoria shifts to dreamlike psych. Then we hit the nadir of the album, “Us against the World,” an annoyingly visceral metal prog song that is redeemed by “Anyhow,” a cool Pink Panther-esque spy movie psych tune. And the album closes with the short “Ten Years Anniversary” instrumental with a heavy Black Sabbath riff. A little uneven, but a decent release for a band which has been around since 2009.
