The Fox's lone 1970 album For Fox Sake is one of those worthy underground releases that slipped through the cracks, only to become a collector's item years later. Previously reissued by RPM and Sommer Records, it now receives the Think Like a Key treatment, complete with four bonus tracks and a superb restoration by Prof. Stoned. Formed in Britain in 1968, The Fox occupied a musical space between late psychedelia, blue-eyed soul, and the emerging progressive rock movement. Their sound is distinguished by Alex Lane's prominent Hammond organ, which drives much of the album's appeal. Songs like "Lovely Day," "As She Walks Away," and "Glad I Could" blend soulful vocals, psychedelic guitar work, and rich keyboard textures that recall contemporaries such as Vanilla Fudge, Traffic, or Rare Bird. The band also demonstrates considerable range. "Butterfly" offers a delicate acoustic interlude with subtle sitar touches, while "Goodtime Music" ventures into bluesy piano boogie. Elsewhere, "Mr. Blank," "Man in a Fast Car," and "Birthday Card" showcase the group's melodic instincts and strong songwriting. The album's centerpiece is the nearly ten-minute "Madame Magical," a multi-faceted psych-rock excursion that moves through shifting moods, blues influences, soulful passages, and extended instrumental sections. It captures both the band's ambition and the spirit of the era. The four bonus tracks provide an interesting look at The Fox before studio polishing and A&R intervention. In particular, the demos of "Mr. Blank" and "Lovely Day" reveal a rougher, more direct sound that some listeners may actually prefer. While For Fox Sake is not a forgotten masterpiece, it is a highly enjoyable snapshot of the fertile period when psychedelia was evolving into progressive and hard rock. Think Like a Key's reissue offers a welcome opportunity to rediscover a talented band that deserved better than obscurity.
