The Fishheads — Lobster Basque Replica

With a nod to Captain Beefheart, the loose collection of musicians known as The Fishheads rounded up by Marc Swordfish of Astralasia released Lobster Basque Replica as the 100th release on the Fruits de Mer sub-label crustacean. Originally intended as a double 7-inch release, the rising vinyl costs would have made the price higher than an LP, plus all of the music would not have fit on two 7-inch discs. And due to the volume of music produced, the album comes with a bonus CD of extra music. The first side of the album consists of three excellent covers of iconic Pink Floyd songs: “See Emily Play,” “Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun,” and “Remember a Day.” Plus a funky Krautrock cover of Mighty Baby’s “Egyptian Tomb.” For this release, they once again feature members of Astralasia, plus Anton Barbeau, Simon House, and Icarus Peel in an unholy alliance that breathes new life into these well-known songs. Side two is a side long psych jam called “Oops! Something’s Coming from Another Planet,” loosely based on a well known West Side Story song. The first two to three minutes are quite lyrical with flute augmenting the band, then the music morphs into a mysterious space jam that takes you on an interstellar journey. The bonus CD presents other versions os “See Emily Play,” “Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun,” “Remember a Day,” “Remember a Day with Anton Barbeau,” “Egyptian Tomb Radio Edit,” “Egyptian Tomb Full Version,” “Something’s Coming from Another Planet,” and “Lola’s Story (A Trans Dub Narrative).” The full version of “Egyptian Tomb” is simply outstanding. And for those of you wondering who Lola is, Lola is the sexy lobster on the album cover. This final track is a wild trippy and freaky 12-minute sonic extravaganza. Lobster Basque Replica is definitely worth checking out for fans of early Pink Floyd.
