#3: Underschön Cover art

The Danny Cannon Show is a band that serves to illustrate one of my governing principles as a music listener and reviewer, that quality is independent of genre. Not that I’m quite sure what genre is appropriate for them, or that I believe it serves much purpose to assign a genre. I’m unfamiliar with their previous work, which goes back to 2006, but if #3: Underschön is any guide, it’s bound to be good stuff. It’s been more than ten years since their last album, so they’ve had time to polish the tunes to a fine degree, and the result is seven tracks of catchy rock with slightly grungy guitars and dreamy, melodic vocals. The clear singing and sweet harmonies are contrasted with feedback and fuzz, and the arrangements are intelligent and varied. Among the many moments I really like is the opening of the final track, “Down in the Hollow,” which has two guitar parts that are slightly different on the left and right channels, bending notes differently to great effect. I could argue that there are touches of psychedelia in these tracks, but that’s really irrelevant. Anyone who likes clever, well-made rock music should be able to enjoy this album.
