Syndromeda — In Touch with the Stars
(Neu Harmony NH022, 2001, CD / DL)

In Touch with the Stars Cover art

Belgian Danny Budts has done it again with another fine piece of electronic space music, perfectly balancing long stretches of ethereal ambience with totally fun sequencer energy. Starting with the 18-minute “So So Far Away,” several minutes float coolly by until a slow bass rhythm chugs along, followed by high, tinkling electronics that hit just right. Finally, a soaring synth lead takes over, seemingly at the perfect moment. The cool ambience returns toward the end of the track, marking a great beginning to the CD. “The Last Influence” has a tribal beat running through it, and sounds like some of Ron Boots’ moodier works, definitely not a bad thing. Most tracks patiently develop over at least ten minutes or so. Retro sounds galore fill “No Way Back,” particularly Mellotron strings and a very Moog-like lead that goes ooo-eee-ooo all over the place, just like it should. Plenty throughout for Berlin school fans to appreciate. This is a live recording from Danny’s 2001 performance at Jodrell Bank. My only complaint is that the applause sounds very artificially inserted at the end of each track. It’s a distraction that easily could have been left out.
