Susanna Lindeborg's Mwendo Dawa — Enter the Outloop

Swedish band Mwendo Dawa inhabit the spacey jazz realm that also serves as home to Weather Report and Earthworks. Saxophonist Ove Johansson is the primary composer, and it is his sound on the tenor and EWI (Electronic Wind Instrument) that sets the tone. There are strong contributions from keyboardist Susanna Lindeborg, who plays piano and a variety of unusual synths, and drummer David Sundby, who has a very fluid touch. The use of electronic sounds is what reminds me of Bill Bruford’s Earthworks recordings, only here the drummer sticks to a traditional kit and leaves the noises to Lindeborg.
