Sproingg — Hirnkäse
(Bandcamp no#, 2023, CD / DL)
by Henry Schneider, Published 2024-01-17
Those reverberating lads from Frieburg, Germany return with a new album, Hirnkäse, which translates into Brain Cheese, accompanied by its disturbing yet whimsical cover art. Building on their previous work, Sproingg’s third album features their fascination with spoken sounds, vocal clicks, and made up words, peppered throughout the eleven mostly instrumental tracks. The two shortest tracks, “Ggniorps 1” and “Ggniorps 2,” both clocking in under a minute each, take these verbal explorations and experiments to the max. Sandwiched in between are some very inventive and melodically dissonant creatively titled tracks. “From Whom the Belch Tolls” features some tasty Mellotron; “Antetonkel,” that looks like a made up word, is a very laid back and complex flight of fancy with violin and prog fusion; “And Her Name Was 'Jo-Jo, the Dog-Faced Boy' Part 2” is a continuation of part 1 from their previous album with some crazed avant garde scat singing with a funky prog rock vibe; the title track with its mysterious instrumentation alternating with heavy intricate melodies, sustained vocal harmonies, and aggressive bass (is this the musical equivalent of scooping out brain cheese?); “Abababa” an avant garde dub track with crazed singing; another rhythmic verbal experiment plus violin and bass “Tschuwak Tschubak”; the hypnotic “High Up on Mushroom Hill” with its lovely lead guitar melodies; and the overtly Frippian “Ridge of Peas, Nation of Peace” with complex rhythms, dissonant chords, and garbled verbal interchanges. In addition, there is the bonus track “Higher Up on Mushroom Hill (Alternate Take)” with a more cosmic interpretation of the track. Hirnkäse is quite an excellent album for the adventurous listener.
