Spirit Skinned — Spirit Skinned
(Bandcamp Edelfaul no#, 2021, DL)

There is a new Israeli duo named Spirit Skinned that is making some very interesting music. Consisting of vocalist Ben Ronen (AKA Diburnagua) and producer Ofer Tisser they combine elements of post punk, noise, dub, industrial, and experimental beat-based electronics on their self-titled debut release on Berlin-based Edefaul Recordings. Rooted in the musical underground of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, a high tension zone, Spirit Skinned has a reputation for an uncompromising and radical approach to their DIY attitude, recalling the post punk era, reminding me of the 70s / 80s cassette culture and bands like The Swell Maps, Die Tödliche Doris, and Current 93. Taking a minimalist approach using cheesy rhythm and drum machines plus pulsating electronics, Spirit Skinned’s debut is a collection of seven visceral, crazed, and avant-rock tracks. The tracks are quite diverse. “Dry Season” is a minimal post punk piece with recitation; “Leaving Room” is a percussive track with the vocalist sounding like David Tibet; “The Root” features Shoham Manela on distorted wailing tenor sax; “Hatuli” features Johana Ritmuller on violin for a mournful gothic western vibe; “Ground” consists of scraping, noisy electronics, and distorted throat shredding vocals for a unique rhythmic industrial excursion; “Ancient Trust” begins with ambient sounds and banging that seques to a melodica and then symphonic synths followed by scraping noises; and the pièce de résistance “Once Was Blind” is eleven minutes of avant-rock jamming that appears to be strongly influenced by Can’s “You Doo Right.” Not at all what I expected. A very pleasant surprise.
