After several years on hiatus, Soft Hearted Scientists has regrouped and released their most ambitious and undoubtedly their best album, Waltz of the Weekend, in late 2023. Nathan Hall and bandmates self-released their album via Bandcamp in several formats. Jam-packed with short psych pop songs and longer sound journeys, Waltz of the Weekend received glowing reviews. Now Fruits de Mer Records has elected to release Waltz of the Weekend on three vinyl LPs. Not only does this FdM release include the twelve tracks from the 75-minute CD, side five includes three radical remixes of “Rode My Bike,” “What Grows Inside the Garden,” and “The Sea Anemone Song” by producer Frank Naughton, plus side six presents a sidelong remix of elements from across the album, chopped and channeled free from Hall’s touch, creating “Waltz through the Weekend.” Nathan Hall and Frank Naughton have crafted some truly remarkable lyrics, songs, orchestrations, and compositions. Frank helped graft newly written sections into some songs, which added breadth and depth. For example, “Rode My Bike” is one such song with its Soft Hearted Scientists’ rap and the middle section that took on a life of its own to become the standalone track “Gadzooks!” with a Syd Barrett vibe. By and large the music is the signature Soft Hearted Scientists sound, along with tremelo guitars, megaphone vocals, trippy jams, weird electronics, and even some hints of The Who’s “Our Love Was.” There is something for everyone here from short and catchy pop psych songs to the longer tracks such as the eleven-minute ghost story “Lost Mariners.” If you have yet to experience the intriguing music of Soft Hearted Scientists, Waltz of the Weekend is a great place to start.
