Snowdrops — Inner Fires
(Bandcamp Forwind FWD32, 2021, CD / DL)

Snowdrops is the French chamber duo of Christine Ott (Ondes Martenot, piano, and gong) and Mathieu Gabry (keyboards and tubular bells) created in 2014 to produce music for films, theater, plays, and dance. They’ve been involved in numerous projects, both as a group and as solo artists, including Christine’s 2021 release Time to Die. They have recently started working with Ophir Levy as Theodore Wild Ride. Snowdrops’ Inner Fires is an album that straddles modern classical music, experimental electronics, and contemporary composition that is based more on improvisation than on an overly produced approach. The first two instrumentals “Elevation” and “Egopolis” showcase Christine’s skills on the Ondes Martinot. While “Elevation” is a delicate piece that elevates to floating music, “Egopolis” is a dark introspective excursion, but the piano remains the central piece that ties everything together. “Shadow Society - A Piece of Freedom” is rhythmic piece with hollow sounding electronics that develops into an atmospheric sound poem. Inner Fires closes with “Rüptur 47,” an experimental track with subliminal mechanical whirring, like a spectral washing machine.
