Silent Chaos — Pure Chaos
(Bandcamp We Don't Give a Fuck, 2023, CD / DL)

Pure Chaos Cover art

Silent Chaos is a duo that was formed in Italy but has since relocated to Scotland. Their art is not silent, nor is it chaos, though elements of both enter into the mix. Marta NoOne operates modular synthesizers as well as utilizing autogenerative methods, programming, effects, and her own voice, while Ugo Vantini contributes manipulated field recordings, electronic percussion, and “evolving sounds” — whatever that means. As with their previous release, Macro (2020), the result is a series of slowly morphing soundscapes without conventional musical content. Quincy Jones said, “You have to have melody, rhythm and harmony to make a complete music,” and by that standard, Pure Chaos is either woefully incomplete or not music at all. But Quincy Jones is not the sole arbiter of what counts as music, and the question is more or less meaningless. A person can talk about “the music of the night,” referring to the sound of frogs and insects, and only a pedant would respond, “That’s not really music.” Personally, I don’t really care. Music in the conventional sense is important, but it is not the only valuable thing in life, and it is not the only valuable art form. If you’re in the mood for dancing or a singalong, you’re not going to pick abstract soundscapes for the soundtrack, but there is a time and place for the kind of thing that Silent Chaos does. It’s the kind of thing you let wash over you and don’t need to analyze. Close your eyes and let the obscure sounds conjure an imaginary journey in your mind.
