Never having heard of Rogers and Butler before, I had no idea what to expect from their second album Brighter Day. To provide a bit of background and context, Rogers and Butler is the relatively recent pairing of the songwriting team of British solo artist Edward Rogers and Stephen Butler (New Jersey power-pop bands Smash Palace and Quincy). The duo write and play excellent power pop songs. Rogers (lead vocals) and Butler (lead vocals, guitar, keyboards, and percussion) are accompanied by Don Piper (guitars, backing vocals, and percussion), Sal Maida (bass), Konrad Meissner (drums), Joe McGinty (keyboards), Joe Chiofalo (accordion), and Chris Carmichael (string quartet). Recording and playing in New York City, Rogers & Butler produced eleven original songs for Brighter Day, combining such diverse influences as Billy Joel, The Beatles, George Harrison, Syd Barrett, and Echo and the Bunnymen for a thoroughly enjoyable 39-minute romp through their musical world. My favorite tracks include the late 60s-style British pop psych ballad “A Perfect Market Day” where the string quartet really enhances the music and the music hall song “Cabaret” that tells a story and creates a wonderful mood on Spanish guitar and eventually accordion. The eleven songs are all different and a testament the skills of these seasoned musicians. The day is definitely brighter when you listen to Rogers and Butler!
