Psychic Equalizer — Revealed II
(Bandcamp no#, 2021, CD / DL)

Revealed II Cover art

The international prog band Psychic Equalizer is back with a new EP of six songs, composed and recorded remotely. The new EP explores topics such as war and political division, gender equality in science, and mental health during the pandemic: “The Astronomers,” “Destination Zero,” “Something Hurts,” “The Last of Humankind,” “You Won’t Have My Faith,” and “Lament.” Some pretty heavy subject matter to wrap your brain around. The music ranges from the bleak to the spiritual, metal prog to acoustic. The only drawback for me is India Hooi’s vocals. I am not a fan of nasal vocals. They work when sung in harmony, but not solo. Her voice is better suited for the alto range and that is where she has an edge on her voice. But when she sings soprano, then it doesn’t really work for me. Overall, this new EP will be of interest to fans of prog rock, metal prog, symphonic prog, prog jazz fusion, or electronic music. Even though the pandemic has halted live performances, as well as working together in the studio, musicians have found ways around these restrictions and continue to be creative.
