I was a happy little kid with my hunting dog, who was a great companion, protector, and would follow me around everywhere, even into my high school years. My sister always had the cats, two or three or more at a time, and they didn’t provide any of that — they would show up a few times a day for food, and if they were inside they would always create a ruckus until somebody let them out. They were never very friendly, so I gravitated away from them, but if you could get them to be still long enough, there was always the purr… rone-rone-rone, the sound was very calming. When I saw that Projekt had released this Purr24 collection of various artists on the label collaborating with their cats, initially I didn’t take it too seriously, but in fact these are the artists that I was already listening to, so I figured I should at least give it a hearing, and I’m certainly happy I did. In every case on the fourteen tracks at hand, the cat sounds are rarely the lead voice, instead being woven into the fabric of what the artists would be doing in any event, which in most cases is more or less floating ambient sonic textures with the interesting new dimension of the feline sounds. The set opens with Michael Stearns “Morris Dreams of a Past Life,” beginning with just the cat’s purr, then other sounds join in — birds, reptiles, and more, before Stearns’ synths take a lead role and guide the listener along, eventually moving back to the purr alone. One of the longer cuts is Chris Russel’s “Purrfect Pawsibilities (The Russell Purrtet)” with multiple cats purring and mewing behind Russel’s extended composition on synthesizer, a path that winds through many different portals as it proceeds. “The Next Day” is Nova Cat Purring Sounds / Sam Rosenthal’s contribution, a piece that weaves shimmering melodic synths with gentle purring, opening up new possibilities (Rosenthal’s got a full album of collaborative cat purring titled InterstellarPurr), while Serena Gabriel’s offering “The Feline Path” is one of the most unique among these, combining cat sounds with human voice, synths, and Eastern instrumentation like santoor, zither, and flutes. Similarly, Paulina Fae’s “Skyward” collaboration with her cat Mortimer again puts human voice in the mix (albeit heavily processed) with synths and other instrumentation for a beautiful ascendant power. Also here are Jarguna, theadelaidean, Lorenzo Montanà, Dirk Serries, Deepspace, and many others. A truly captivating collection that should be of interest to fans of any of the artists involved.
