PreHistoric Animals — Finding Love in Strange Places
(Bandcamp Dutch Music Works no#, 2024, CD / LP / DL)

Finding Love in Strange Places Cover art

I previously encountered Sweden’s PreHistoric Animals on The Magical Mystery Machine (Chapter Two), part of a sprawling conceptual work, and now they’re back with Finding Love in Strange Places, which presents nine tracks united by a theme, though maybe not quite as story-oriented as the previous album. They describe the theme as “a dystopic version of the movie Love Actually.” OK… I suppose that even in a dystopian future, people will find others to love, and it’s easy to see it as a metaphor for the present time here on Earth: even when the world is a mess, we can find love and comfort in other human beings, at least on an individual basis. As for the music, the band I’m most frequently reminded of is Saga — check out “Living in a World of Bliss” here. These are melodic and accessible songs with some touches of progressive rock. This is not at all nostalgic or retro sounding. Muse and The Mars Volta occasionally come to mind, but never Yes or Genesis or Pink Floyd. Each song is distinctive, with its own flow, sometimes diverting into atmospheric synthesizers, sometimes grooving on a powerful riff. All of the vocals are very strong, and the instrumental parts are solid without venturing into tricky mathy areas. Fans of progressive rock who are looking for music that isn’t backward-looking should definitely check out PreHistoric Animals.
