Two by Twilight is a powerful portfolio of ten tracks highlighting the collaboration between multi-instrumentalists Peter Phippen and Eric “the” Taylor. The ancient meets the contemporary in a whirlwind of emotion and solitude, like passing through an open gate into a world of clouds and fog highlighted with ribbons of colorful light that seem imagined one moment but very real in the next, seemingly capturing an element of the archaic flooded with the mystery of the present. It’s a very simple formula — just two guys possessing an ability to create maximum emotional impact with their fundamental sonic tools, Taylor using a variety of analog and digital synths, electronic and acoustic percussives, sampled sounds, field recordings, and software tools. Phippen using his vast collections of ancient wooden, bamboo, and clay flutes and shakuhachi. I’m not sure  how much of this was pre-composed and how much is pure improvisation on the spot, but the ideas cut through the primordial fog loud and clear, immersing the listener with a captivating yet gentle feeling of serenity. Most of the pieces here are in the four to six minute range with a couple of outliers, most notably the two final tracks “Conceiver” and “Century Folding, Part One,” both approaching or exceeding the ten minute mark, which alone doesn’t make them any better, but certainly more immersive over the long run, but from the opening title track there seems to be something beautiful and captivating that permeates every piece, locking into the essence of peace and calm. Some of the pieces feature a muted cadence that accompanies the dreaminess, though after enough listens one will think of the album as a whole, with every piece of the puzzle fitting perfectly together. While for some this is probably too far away from the rock idiom, for others it will marshal that ancient beauty that is the essence of tranquility, and that is to whom this review is directed.
