The Life and Times of Blue Larry and the Huguenot Kid Cover art

The Life and Times of Blue Larry and the Huguenot Kid is Peter Daltrey’s 28th album, spanning a long musical career from Kaleidoscope in the 60s, Fairfield Parlour in 1970, and then a string of solo recordings starting in 1993. Peter will turn 80 in March, and he shows no signs of slowing down — in point of fact you could easily think that this new album was created and recorded by a much more youthful man. He has not mellowed with age and his creativity continues to amaze. On The Life and Times of Blue Larry and the Huguenot Kid he blurs fact and fiction to entwine the lives of Blue Larry — a corpulent Los Angeles hustler with mother issues and ill-gotten gains — and the Huguenot Kid, an 18th-century French craftsman fleeing persecution. The thirteen tracks form a song cycle of originals plus an inspired cover of Curved Air’s “Elfin Boy.” Peter is joined by close musician friends and family (his son Oli plays lead guitar on the final track, “Blue Larry”), the recordings are full of warmth, wit, and a touch of menace. His voice and vocal harmonies remind me of Brewer and Shipley, namely their song “Too Soon Tomorrow” from their 1969 debut Weeds. The album is a superb mix of troubadour ballads ala Donovan, 80s New Wave, and 70s gothic psych. Personal favorites include “Our Mutual Disease,” Daltrey’s re-recording of “English Roses,” “My Honeycomb Bride,” “Buffalo,” and “Blue Larry.” The Life and Times of Blue Larry and the Huguenot Kid is undoubtedly the best Think Like a Key release of 2025.
