Nicolas Meier Infinity Group — Last Sunset
(Bandcamp MGP, 2025, DL)

UK-based Swiss guitarist Nicolas Meier has an impressive discography of twelve solo albums starting in 2006. He drew the attention of Jeff Beck and was a member of Jeff Beck’s band from 2013 to 2015. The latest incarnation of Meier’s musical adventures is the Nicolas Meier Infinity Group: Lizzie Ball (violin), Richard Jones (violin), Jimmy Haslip (bass), Vinnie Colaiuta (drums), Arran McSporran (bass), Gary Husband (drums), and Nicolas Meier (guitars), plus guest guitarists Dewa Budjana and Krissy Matthews. The new album, Last Sunset, is a collection of nine amazing instrumentals. The opening track, “Rose on Water,” threw me off as this a neo-classical chamber music track that is totally at odds with the rest of the album; it’s a lovely violin-dominated homage to Jeff Beck that pales in comparison to the rest of the album. The other eight tracks are chock full of imaginative hard-hitting and lyrical rock guitar flights of fantasy. Meier excels in integrating Eastern and Western music, most noticeably on “Strange Sensations,” “Bosphorus,” “Yemin,” and “The Eye of Horus.” In addition there is a strong element of 70s jazz prog fusion (Jeff Beck’s influence is apparent), as well as a hint of Steve Hackett. Last Sunset is an impressive and enjoyable album.
