Nick Nicely — Mike Hall Is Calling

When you gaze upon the Dali-esque Memory Palace cover art, you know are going to be taken on a mind-blowing psychedelic journey by the enigmatic nick nicely. Mike Hall Is Calling is nick nicely’s new Fruits de Mer 7-inch. The title track is side one and “Wonderful Day” is on the flip side. The back of the cover contains a surreal story in three paragraphs about standing close to a precipice and the urge to push Mike as an “accident.” Years later Mike Hall is calling from the dead, or is he half-dead? The music is nicely’s signature lo-fi psych with swirling, shifting sonic textures to accompany Mike’s ghostly message. In contrast, “Wonderful Day” is a true untethered psychedelic freakout with sonic shifts and strong drumming. nicely creates his unique wall of sound, constantly tweaking the mix to his satisfaction, which is a brilliant experience. It has been over 40 years since nicely hit the scene with “Hilly Fields,” and he is still going strong today.
