This five-piece band from Argentina has roots dating back to Buenos Aires in the 70s! Led by keyboardist / composer Lalo Huber, Nexus presents a melodic symphonic album in the style reminiscent of 70s acts like ELP and Yes with lots of sweeping keyboard solos. Huber shares lots or harmony interplay lines with guitarist Carlos Lucena, like in the extended instrumental section of “Eterno y Fugaz.” Nexus has a slightly heavier style at times than their 70s influences, and also serve up more ethereal spacey sections than the average current retro group too. Comparisons to fellow South American band Dogma are perhaps appropriate. Detrás del Umbral (translated as Behind the Gate) is conceptually tied together by a religious thread concerning spiritual realization. While there are nice scattered mezzo vocals by Mariela Gonzalez, much of the album’s 73 minutes is instrumental and primarily features the keyboards. It seems like there should be more vocals actually, as some of the instrumental sections seem to go on too long and because the singer has a good voice. Overall, this a solid release that neo symphonic / melodic types should enjoy.
