Michael Kinney and the Wild Saints — Leaving the Chaos
(Bandcamp no#, 2021, CD / DL)

Leaving the Chaos Cover art

Michael Kinney and the Wild Saints are a Midwest rock band from Wisconsin. Leaving the Chaos is set of ten songs about the feeling of just leaving all the bad stuff in life and moving on to a new adventure. Despite the polished production, musicianship, and occasional nod to Prince, this Middle of the Road rock album is, at best, only of regional appeal. The music reminds me of the 70s post-psych-prog / pre-punk rock doldrums. There is some variation from song to song, but not enough to engage my attention, not even the Peter Townsend-esque song with the intriguing title “Middle-Aged Women on Scooters” that make Kinney’s life complete. The album closes with the bonus track “Trickle McTounce” a song very different from the rest of the album and is its saving grace. This Celtic influenced folky ballad is the one track that would appeal to our readership. However, if you miss the heady days of 80s Heartland rock, you may find Leaving the Chaos of interest.
