Megalith Levitation — Obscure Fire
(Addicted Label BNiL 645, 2023, CD / DL)

Obscure Fire Cover art

Russian band Megalith Levitation is the Billy Pilgrim of metal sludge music — they have become unstuck in time. There is no past, no future, the music on their new album Obscure Fire is just now. Slow ponderous, monotonous, repeated, distorted guitar chords last for 42 minutes spanning five tracks that segue seamlessly from the first to the last. The only variables are the occasional vocals along with the rare tempo changes. With the track titles “Obscure Fire,” “Of Silence,” “Descending,” “Into the Depths,” and “Of Eternal Doom,” you get some idea of the doom-laden sludge you will experience on Obscure Fire. All that I can think of is “Doom!  Doom!  Thulsa Doom!” as Megalith Levitation plunges the listener into the directionless nether depths of the cloying miasma of sonic distortion. It takes a very special listener to brave this musical excursion and return unscathed. Not for the weak of heart, approach with caution.
