Marcus Cato is a Swedish session musician with a career dating back to 1999. Despite Adrian Recordings’ ongoing pressure on him to record and release solo material, he held off. In 2008 Marcus accepted a challenge to write and demo 150 songs in the course of one year. Adrian released a selection of these demos as 1H and 2H in 2008 and 2009 respectively. Then for the next ten years Marcus retreated to the anonymity of ghost writing. In 2020 during the pandemic, he became active again and submitted an increasing number of demos at an accelerating pace. The label felt these demos needed to be released as new Marcus Cato albums, rather than passing them on to other artists for further development. So they planned a series of Marcus Cato releases for 2022 with MCIII being the first — though it is more properly an EP rather than a full length album, as the ten tracks only last about 15 minutes. The tracks range from one to two minutes in duration and are basically short, partially developed, electronic tone poems. Most of them are dark, introspective explorations that just start to hint at something before they end abruptly. I am not at all sure of the value of releasing these germs of ideas without taking them further, the result being that you are left unsatisfied. If Adrian Recordings had blended these ten tracks into one long 15 minute piece, that would have been more interesting, rather than these ten sonic snippets.
