Máire Brennan, one of the founding members of Irish band Clannad, is the sister of New Age Celtic superstar Enya, and there is more than a passing resemblance between both their voices and their music. But where Enya stays tightly within her chart-topping formula of massed vocal overdubs with minimal accompaniment, Máire adds a little more variety to her sound. You’ll find more in the way of fiddles, whistles, and percussion, even sometimes including a drum kit, and even some energetic playing. The overall sound, though, is lush and comforting, with the Irish touches sometimes little more than spicing to the stew. One other difference between the sisters is that Máire’s music is overtly religious, being marketed as both Celtic and Celtic Christian. While I’m sure there’s an audience for this, it’s a good thing the music is beautiful enough that you can ignore the lyrics and just enjoy the sound.
