On Rhino, Linda Cushma gives us a taste of what the next Oxygene8 album might sound like, though I haven’t heard whether these two tracks will be included. The title track is a tasty Stick jam, with the kind of tapping rhythm the instrument is known for — funky and intricate — combined with some adventurous guitar work and drums that bridge acoustic and electronic. The guitarists associated with the project are Federico Miranda and Pablo Tato, and Primus drummer Tim Alexander is credited with tom-toms, so I’m guessing that the majority of the percussion is programmed. Cushma herself functions in a supporting role for some crazy guitar playing. All in all, it reminds me of a track that could have been on one of the Tony Levin Band albums. The B-side, so to speak, is “Santa Monica,” which has a slower tempo and a slinky riff that shows off the percussive, fat tone of the Stick’s bass strings. There are also some snaky melodic parts that could be either guitar or Stick. In either case, it’s a fun track that builds to a satisfyingly intense climax. So feast your ears on Rhino, keep your eyes open for a new album, and while you’re waiting, seek out the previous Oxygene8 releases if you can find them.
