Imagine, if you will, that you are reclining in a meadow on a summer afternoon, gazing at the clouds as they slowly drift over you, and then waking later realizing that you lost one hour of your life. That experience is akin to listening to the Italian band L'Estate di San Martino’s new album Kim. L'Estate di San Martino was orignallly formed in 1975 with a very sparse discography. Their previous album, Talsete di Marsantino, was released in 2012. Their firth album, Kim, is a concept album addressing issues such as evolution, transhumanism, the eternal contrast between religion and science, and the limit to which it can be pushed, though you would not be able to glean this from the music. There is nothing ground breaking happening on the album, it is primarily an exploration of 80s prog/jazz fusion. Their new vocalist Andrea Pieroni is a pleasant tenor who contributes to the smooth sound of their music, there no interesting rough corners to navigate. And the final track, “Tewar,” lasts two minutes, but on the CD version, it is one of those mysteries where the track is 11 minutes and contains an additional three untitled tracks. There is a gap of 50 seconds after “Tewar” ends and then bam! The additional tracks start. Why do bands do that? Was it a mistake or a bonus for the CD version? And why not make the effort to name these three mystery tracks? This is s puzzlement. Be that as it may, L'Estate di San Martino seem to be having fun, but they are not setting the world on fire with Kim.
