Leslie Keffer — Belong to the Earth
((Not on label) no#, 2021, DL)

by Henry Schneider, Published 2021-08-24

Belong to the Earth Cover art Despite Leslie Keffer performing and recording since 2003 and releasing over 25 experimental albums and playing with The Laundry Room Squelchers, Thurston Moore, and Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth, Rodger Stella, and Unicorn Hard-On, I was thrown off by Leslie’s Earth Mother Goddess photos of her decked out in flowing fabric, mushrooms and fungi, bark, and other forest detritus. I thought mistakenly that Belong to the Earth would be an experimental deep woods release. Instead this EP is six electronic tracks powered by drum machines in the three to four minute range. The title track kicks things off with dark, rumbling, tectonic shifting, revealing hidden places. Pretty cool, but the rest of the tracks veer off into a different direction. Electronics, sometimes buzzy, sometimes snappy, weave in and out of the analog electronic percussion. These other five tracks are primarily rhythm and tend not to engage the listener. Pretty much a DIY release recorded on 2 Korg Kaosillator Pros and a MicroKorg synth. If you find formless industrial music and noise interesting, check out Belong to the Earth.
