Eto Est' To Cover art

Russian post-rock, jazz, experimental, prog, and electronic band Kshettra has released a new album that is a departure from their previous album and a step towards warm harmonies, enriched with bright inclusions of electronics and nu-jazz. Это есть то, or Thou Art That in English, began as a collaboration between founding members Boris Ghas and Viktor Tikhonov with french horn player Gosha Rodin, that led to including an additional eight musicians. All track titles are in Russian, with translations to English on their Bandcamp page, though some titles appear to be just transliterated as meaningless English words:  “Tumanama,” “Butohstep,” “Colo-colo,” and “Shivoham,” though there may be some meaning in Indian culture. Some of the tracks have a progressive jazz vibe, showing some Soft Machine or Weather Report influence. Other tracks have an ambient and mystical feel with bowls and wind chimes. For me, the best track on the album is the closer “Shivoham.” This excellent dark and eerie track, with its Mid-Eastern vibe, is inspired by the sayings of Advaita and Shaivism about the identity of the individual soul and the divine absolute, though you wouldn’t know it from the wordless female vocals. I had to rely on the promo material for insight into this track. An interesting album that shows the continual musical journey of a band.
