Kosmodome — Kosmodome

Kosmodome is a duo of two brothers, Sturle (guitar, bass, vocals) and Severin (drums, vocals) Sandvik, based in Bergen. Their music sits comfortably in the realm of psychedelic rock, with incursions from stoner rock here and there, and the overriding impression is one that these guys know what they’re doing. Sure, there are some big heavy riffs, but the vocals are very tuneful with some great harmony parts, and there are lots of passages where they resemble Syd Arthur more than Mastodon. Some of the tracks are complex enough to warrant references to progressive rock as well. Aside from the brothers Sandvik, guests contribute keyboards (Jonas Særsten of Shaman Elephant), guitar (Morten Olsen on two tracks), and bass (Ole-Andreas Jensen of Shaman Elephant on one track). I had encountered Severin Sandvik previously in the band Slomosa, but Sturle doesn’t seem to have any other credits to his name (yet — in the Norwegian scene, he’ll probably end up in a half dozen other bands over the next few years). From start to end, the album is a lot of fun, just the right blend of heaviness and subtlety, with both the guitars and the vocals being the major part of this. Sturle is a great singer, and the backing parts are really tasty; his guitar work is stellar as well, blending a variety of tones together, so you’re likely to hear sludgy fuzz, chiming clean arpeggios, and twangy lines all blended together in the arrangements. Add in the occasional electric piano or Mellotron and a few odd meters, and you’ve got rock magic. Yet another winner from Norway.
