Korai Öröm — Recycled
((Not on label) KORA 004, 1998, CD)

Recycled Cover art

On Recycled, Hungary’s preeminent psychedelic ensemble collaborates with several DJ acquaintances to concoct remixes, drawing from the material found on their first three albums. The results are rather striking, as one can hardly correlate the elements of these tracks to the original source music. Vibrant drones and lush washes of effects pulsate with entrancing trypno dance rhythms. The tracks are diverse in atmosphere and imaginative in their textural contrasts, vividly conjuring up a somewhat incongruous earthy, tribal rave. The mood flows from dark and eerie urban jams to placid, meditative soundscapes. Odd-meter grooves are cleverly wrapped into edgy techno sequences, while breakdowns dissolve into ambient reflections enriched by a seemingly boundless instrumental palette. These eight tracks may not quite represent the cutting edge of remixology, but they employ the tools and techniques adeptly to create catchy, original works. Recycled lies a bit outside the typical prog-psych realm, but it’s surely a fun and worthwhile listen.
