Originally released in 1989, Collection is a compilation of all of Klaus Krüger's solo works from the late 70s and early 80s. This reissue is also a limited-edition set, hand numbered and autographed (1000 total copies). If Krüger's name sounds familiar, it's most likely because he played drums with Tangerine Dream for a while, and also was a member of the Cosmic Couriers. Klaus went on to become a drummer for punk icon Iggy Pop as well, and his brand of electronica in this collection hints at the rudimentary statements of the punk rock ideology, as well as early-80s MTV-style dance bands. Klaus contributes most of the music on analog synth and drums, and Ashra's Manuel Göttsching guests on guitar in a few places. Sequences and deliberate grooves abound, all in a style fitting of the era. The material was recorded and produced in ex-T-Dreamer Chris Franke's Berlin studio. Collection is a good historical document of this transitional time in German electronic music, where rhythm became the dominating factor. Some of the performances here are a little less inspired than the work of Krüger's peers, however. The hardcore German electronic enthusiast will appreciate this package the most, while those fans who just like to dabble in the scene would do better to stick with the more well-known artists.
