John G. Perry — Sunset Wading
(Esoteric Recordings ECLEC2041, 1976/2008, CD)
by Jeff Melton, Published 2000-05-01
For those of you not in the know, John G. Perry was an essential member of two of the most innovative groups in the UK. One band was the For Girls Who Grow Plump in the Night line-up of Caravan (arguably the best incarnation for the group) and the other was Quantum Jump (featuring Rupert Hine). Perry is a bassist and backing vocalist with some distinct arranging capabilities which were masked while in an ensemble context. Sunset Wading was Perry’s first solo project after leaving Caravan in 1974. Enlisted in this album are also the fine talents of two members from Italy’s premiere fusion group, Nova: guitarist Corrado Rustici and woodwinds player, Elio d’Anna as well as Geoff Richardson on viola. Listening again to the disc, which I’ve had on LP for many years, there is a soothing Jade Warrior type atmosphere in the fourteen songs on the disc. And their are even a few work out pieces such as an “As Clouds Gather” with Rustici’s Mahavishnu style dialogue against d’Anna’s flute segueing across a bright piano passage. “Ah Well You Can Only Get Wet” is another track with Rustici tearing it up over a string section which also contains some percussion interjections from Morris Pert (ex-Brand X). Also important to mention is the environmental backdrop of the recording which adds depth and structure to the album. The overall tone is one of a lush pastel recording which fits into the instrumental Caravan or the best Camel concept albums (Snow Goose). My advice is to quickly find this album before it or Sunbird (Perry’s second album) go out of print again.
