An Exquisite Moment Cover art

Joel Goodman is an Emmy-winning composer of more than 150 film and television projects. His debut album, An Exquisite Moment, is a deeply personal and improvisation-rich set of seven middle-of-the-road smooth jazz instrumentals ala Kenny G. Goodman (bass, keyboards) is joined by Randy Brecker (flugelhorn, trumpet), Brandee Younger (harp), Lisa Fischer (vocals), John Patitucci (bass), Philippe Saisse (piano, vibes, marimba), Donny McCaslin (saxophones), Eric Harland (drums), Adam Rogers (guitar), Mino Cinélu (percussion), and Scott Colley (bass). But all that talent fails to raise the music above the mediocre. Though “Rumi and the Whirling Dervish” and the closing tack “Astral Projection” do try their best to break away, only to fall back in line with the rest of the album. Kind of goes with the territory of unplanned improvisations. An Exquisite Moment is certainly an exquisite moment of something, but certainly not worthy of our readership’s time. It might possibly work as background music in a cocktail lounge.
