Look out your window any time in December or January and you’re bound to see the kind of imagery and experience the feelings that inspired this latest four-song 30-minute EP by ambient guitarist Jeff Pearce. It’s the music of winter in its purest form, its essence, capturing the cold, the light, and perhaps the isolation, without any of the Jolly Saint Nick and Christmas nonsense that one normally cannot escape from this time of year. I promise you, there are no sleigh bells or tambourines in Pearce’s winter-inspired instrumental endeavor, just beautiful, inspired, elastic guitars painting soundscapes of winter. Plenty of effects, loops, and treatments, of course —  it’s not an effort to disguise the sound of the guitar, more of an effort to achieve a certain sound — peace and calm, using whatever tools one has at their disposal, and to be fair, in this case that also includes piano and Chapman Stick, though one will never be able to pick them out of the mix, as all of the sound blends together beautifully. The program begins with two shorter tracks, “December Chant” and “Winterchill,” both around five minutes each, the former creating colorful melodic sprites on a dark shimmering ambient background as it proceeds, the latter is almost symphonic in nature, though morphing slowly through a series of ambient chord changes. “Slowly Falling (Infinite Ambient Mix)” is a ten-minute remix of an hour-long single track that’s been on Pearce’s Bandcamp page since around December 2021, one that benefits from the more concise edit / remix approach created on Pearce’s Infinite Ambient site, and closing the proceedings is the nine-plus minute “Snow Reflecting Stars,” by far the dreamiest of the four pieces, with sweeping rays of light, shadow, and color, a piece that accurately illustrates the feeling of winter.
