Much like Kiss of the Liquid Moon (2024), Interim presents guitarist Jeff Aug using his acoustic guitar as the foundation for music that bridges several traditions from the instrument’s history. Several of the twelve tracks feature the acoustic alone or double-tracked, while others add touches of electric guitar or violin. Aug is joined by second guitarist Oskar Tauber on one track and violinist Justin Ciuche on another. I would describe Aug’s style as based in rock, but infused with elements from folk, Classical, and other guitar traditions. At some times, a listener might be reminded of Steve Howe or Anthony Phillips, but not in a direct way. His use of varying techniques, from picking to fingers to hammer-on, is smooth and always in service of the compositions. When the album first arrived, I was concerned that I might get tired of a whole album of acoustic guitar, but the variety in arrangements keeps things interesting. The performances are both skillful and emotive, and as a whole, the album is subtle enough to work as background music but full of interest that rewards closer listening. Interim is another fine entry in Jeff Aug’s catalog of releases.
