The French avant-prog band Jack Dupon is now the trio of Thomas Larsen (drums, vocals), Arnaud M’Doihoma (bass, vocals), and Gregory Pozzoli (guitar, vocals), and I have found it difficult to listen to and review their new album Toucan. Toucan is definitely an album for the discerning musical palate. The six tracks (“Toucan,” “Zombie,” “Nouvelle Tête,” “Garagiste,” “Muté,” and “Pyjama”) present a far more agitated band than their earlier releases. 60 minutes of harsh, dissonant, and distorted instruments and vocals along with relentless riffing can be challenging. There is definitely a subliminal Frippian influence running through the album along with some jazzy bits thrown in from time to time. And once in a while there is some respite from this sonic assault, such as the midpoint shift of mood and texture on “Nouvelle Tête” that is close to enjoyable. Overall, Toucan is a major tectonic shift from Jack Dupon’s earlier music, and not something for casual listening. Definitely makes you wonder what events occurred for the band over the past three years. So if you are a fan of modulated vocals, boisterous bass, and distorted dissonance, then you may find Toucan of interest. Otherwise approach with caution and focus your attention on Jack Dupon’s earlier albums.
