It’s 1972, and all around is the sound of electric guitars tossing off heavily distorted blues riffs while charismatic dudes sing about girls. Oh, wait, it’s 2024, and that doesn’t happen so much anymore. Howlin’ Sun is a Norwegian band that has seemingly appeared out of a time warp from that earlier age. Stylistically, they’re carrying on from their self-titled debut, but there’s no need to fix what ain’t broke. If this album had come out in the 70s, it’s hard to say if it would have been noticed among the other bands doing similar things — I suppose it might come down to whether their live delivery matches the strength of the music. In any case, for the current crop of retro hard rockers, Howlin’ Sun is near the top of the heap, riffing their way to rock ‘n’ roll bliss and not worrying about what decade it is.
