Hollow’s fourth album, Tower, is a followup to 2019’s Between Eternities of Darkness. Lead by Andreas Stoltz (ex-Binary Creed), this Swedish power prog band has been around since the late 90s. Being totally unfamilier with both Stoltz and Hollow, I was a bit wary of approaching this new album, thinking that it would be a sonic barrage of Cookie Monster on steroids vocals and heavily distorted guitars. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that instead Hollow brings a palatable 70s hard rock approach to their music and performance, bringing to mind bands like Judas Priest and Queensrÿche. The album is relatively short with ten tunes clocking in for a total of 36 minutes. Tower is a concept album telling a fantasy story about inner change and that we are all trapped in our towers (read minds). The 70s metal vibe is pervasive, with the rare calm moments and melodic guitar lines. Recommended if you are a fan of 70s metal prog.
