Heterochrome — From the Ashes
(Bandcamp no#, 2022, DL)

From the Ashes Cover art

Heterochrome, meaning of two colors, usually associated with eyes of two different colors, is also the name of this Iranian metal prog band formed in 2014. They released their debut album, Melancholia, in 2017, and then two band members, Arash and Mida, left Iran in 2018, which put the brakes on their second album. After four years of songwriting and production, recording in Iran, Finland, Canada, Spain, and South Korea, they mastered From the Ashes in Russia and released it on May 13, 2022. The songs are sung in either Farsi, English, or some combination. Mida’s vocals are spot on, but Arash tends to indulge himself with the overdone, over the top, Cookie-Monster-on-steroids throat-shredding singing, which tends to destroy any listening pleasure you may gain from the album. Fortunately, there are some brief respites where Arash’s true voice shines through. Essentially From the Ashes is a set of ten prog metal protest songs about the Iranian government and their policies, climate change, etc. The best track on the album is the instrumental “WOTB” where Arash shows off his guitar chops. Leaning more towards the metal side than prog, there are a few moments of prog clarity on the album. But not really much to recommend to our readership.
